The power of locking a door and throwing away the key.
What "doors" do you still have access to?
The other night I was outside and a guy threw this key at me. I paused and said, “it was in the garbage, let me put it back.”
He said, “no, keep it, you may need it.” followed by some mumbling. I clutched it and said, “okay.”
I could have written this off as some crazy experience by a dumpster diver but I felt like going down a “what could it mean” rabbit hole instead.
I looked down and read the tag “Casa De Ari - 25.”
Hecho en Colombia was written on the key itself. I googled the name and saw the key belongs to a hostel in Bogota, Colombia. I’m guessing, it was to room 25.
This was one of the weirdest experiences I’ve had recently.
Sometimes, the universe just wants to get your attention and this definitely got mine.
How did this key get to Hawaii all the way from Colombia, and why did it find me before being taken by the dumpster?
Who did it belong to? Where are they now?
Whoever had this key before me came to Hawaii for some reason.
Did they throw the key away on purpose with zero intention of going back?
Why did they take it with them in the first place?
Why didn’t they try to mail it back instead?
A key can symbolize the unlocking of a new door or experience.
It can also lock a door behind you.
The truth is, we need to fearlessly go after the things we want in life as much as we need to fearlessly close all the doors we no longer want or need open.
What doors are you keeping open in your life and for what reason?
If you have ever shuffled a tarot deck, you may remember the 7 of cups card.
On that card, there’s a man facing 7 cups. Some of them have gifts while others have a dragon or a snake.
Sometimes difficult choices need to be made. Seeing plenty of options in front of you can feel like having too many cups to choose from.
Just like holding on to too many keys, means you may have access to “doors” that should be locked for good.
Perhaps I can take this key to Colombia and see what doors unlock for me there.
For a moment, it represented a cup I could drink from one day.
It’s not the first cup I am choosing to drink, but you never know what the future holds.
Till then an inventory of keys, cups, and doors might be enough.
Are you planning on doing the same?
